To build a tennis backboard, build a support frame out of wooden beams. Then, attach sheets of plywood. Install metal fence brackets to the back of the support frame, and hang it on a fence.
- Build the backboard
Use large sheets of plywood to build a backboard that measures 16 feet tall by 16 feet wide. Anchor the sheets together using screws and slim wood braces. Paint it a solid color. Add a straight white stripe at the net height, and set the board aside to dry.
- Build backboard supports
Buy five 12-foot wooden beams that measure 4 inches square. Choose beams that are made from pressure-treated wood to prevent the backboard from warping. Lay the beams out at 4-foot intervals. Lay 2-inch-by-4-inch beams vertically across the boards to form a grid, placing one beam every 2 feet. Screw the pieces together.
- Attach the backboard
Flip the backboard over so that it is laying on the support frame, making sure the painted side is facing up. Screw it into the 2-foot-by-4-foot beams.
- Add metal brackets
Buy 16 metal fence brackets. Flip the backboard assembly over. Attach one bracket every 4 feet along the top edge of the support frame. Do the same in four vertical lines, attaching one after every 4 feet.
- Hang the backboard
Use the metal brackets to secure the backboard assembly to a tall fence. Ensure that the side with the net line is closest to the ground.
