What is Star Alliance?

Star Alliance is a worldwide airline alliance that enables airline companies to communicate more easily and share resources. As of December 2015, the alliance has 28 members from all over the world. Some of the member airlines include United Airlines, South African Airways, Asiana Airlines and Turkish Airlines.

The alliance also provides customers with shared services and offers. For instance, a customer can gain flight miles from Singapore Air and use them for award flights by any of the alliance member airlines.

Five members founded the alliance on May 14, 1997. These members include Air Canada, Lufhansa, SAS, Thai Airways International and United Airlines. As of December 2015, Avianca from Brazil is the newest member of the alliance.
