Businesses typically use panel trucks for delivery of small, lightweight items such as building supplies or groceries, as well as transporting plumbing and carpentry tools. Historically, they also have been used as hearses or ambulances, but these uses have largely fallen out of favor in the United States and Canada.

Panel trucks are two-door sedans with long enclosed back sections. Typical panel truck dimensions are similar to those of pick-up trucks, but panel trucks are fully enclosed rather than open in back. Most panel trucks don't have side windows in the rear section, but some have windows in the rear door.
