A young donkey is called a foal or colt. A female donkey, called a jenny or jennet, is usually pregnant for around 12 months and gives birth to a single foal. It is a very rare occurrence for a female to birth twin donkeys.
The donkey is a tame member of the Equidae family. Donkeys are common in underdeveloped countries and have been serving their owners for more than 5000 years. Some donkeys are used for breeding or are kept as pets in industrialized countries.
The gestation period of a baby donkey ranges from 11 to 14 months. Foals are reproduced one at a time. There is only 1.7-percent chance of a jennet giving birth to twins. Twin foals have a 14-percent survival rate.
