What camera is needed to take good photographs of cougars?

To take good photographs of cougars, photographer Steve Winter of National Geographic magazine uses a Canon digital single-reflex camera and a Canon lens with an infrared beam. It took Winter 15 months using a four-camera setup to photograph P22, a male cougar that frequents Griffith Park in Hollywood, California.
Winter's photographs help highlight the need for an overpass for the wild cats in the area. Mountain lions, commonly called cougars, live near American urban environments such as the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area outside of Los Angeles. In 2012, a Morgan County trail camera captured an image of a cougar, the first ever photographed in Illinois.
