There is no evidence that suggests agave causes diabetes, notes WebMD. Being overweight increases the risk for Type 2 diabetes, while Type 1 diabetes is genetic and not linked to sugar consumption, explains the American Diabetes Association.
Agave is a plant native to Mexico, from which agave nectar or syrup is derived, according to Healthline. Agave is reputedly high in fructose but low on the glycemic index scale, reports WebMD. Agave nectar is a sweetener that can substitute in small amounts for higher carbohydrate foods. Compared to table sugar, which contains 40 calories per tablespoon, agave contains about 60 calories per serving.
