Most states allow public access to probate court records, but may impose some limitations. Some information in court cases, such as general facts surrounding the case, are usually public, but states may withhold personal information like social security numbers and addresses. Each state sets forth its policy for court records in privacy policies, according to the National Center for State Courts website.
In addition to imposing limitations on the availability of information, states may require fees for accessing and viewing the information, notes the NCSC. Some states, such as Alabama, have fees for all records accessed, while Alaska does not.
