Organizations such as Yahoo! Finance and Investopedia offer tips for beginners who want to want to learn more about how to read stock quotes. Both of these sites offer sections devoted to teaching new investors the ins and outs of different ways to profit using the stock market.

Stock quote listings have column headings that can be confusing to read because of their abbreviations. Listings include an abbreviated company name; the three-letter stock ticker symbol; the dividend and the yield (if applicable); price-to-earnings ratio; and volume. The high and low trading prices from the prior trading day and the high and low over the previous 52-week period also appear in these listings.
