Where can you find canned food expiration dates?

The expiration dates for canned food is often stamped on the top, bottom or the label of the can. Instead of expiration dates some cans list best-by and sell-by dates.

Canned meats like chicken and tuna and vegetables have a longer storage. This type of canned food can usually be safely kept in the pantry for 5 years. Highly acidic canned goods, including fruits and tomatoes have a shorter shelf life of 1 1/2 years.

If canned foods leak or begin to bulge they should be discarded. Likewise, if the food gives off a foul odor or has changed in texture and color it should not be consumed.
