There are two methods of submission -- online and telephone -- for cases presented on the show "Judge Mathis." Telephone submission requires a brief description of the case and return contact information. Online submission requires a form containing case details and return contact information. Producers select cases and contact litigants.

"Judge Mathis" is a nationally syndicated reality show in its 15th season, as of February 2015, with one of the youngest court-reality show audiences according to Nielson ratings. It is produced by AND Syndicated Productions and Telepictures Productions and distributed by Warner Brothers Domestic Television Distribution. Former Detroit-area District Court Judge Greg Mathis presides over the cases selected for inclusion in the show. Judge Mathis hears and rules on four cases in each hour-long episode. His decisions are legal and binding.

Judge Mathis' personal history of reformation provides the basis for his characteristic straightforward honesty, humor and street-wise style. When he was young, he was involved with gangs, spent time in jail and dropped out of school. A promise to his dying mother prompted him to change his life. He earned his general education degree, graduated college and received a Juris Doctor degree. He served as Superior Court judge for Michigan's 36th district between 1995 and 1998, when he retired and began work on "Judge Mathis."
