Certified coding specialists work in hospitals, doctor offices, nursing homes and other health care facilities to give numeric codes to procedures and diagnoses. A certified coding specialist reads a patient's charts and translates the information into codes. These codes are then sent to insurance companies or to government health care programs for billing. Students interested in becoming certified coding specialists must take courses in anatomy and medical terminology to receive certification. Those who already have some coding experience can also become certified.
