Can a chipped ceramic floor tile be repaired?

A chipped ceramic floor tile can be fixed by filling in the chipped portion of the tile or, alternatively, the whole piece of tile can be taken out and replaced with a new tile. If the damage on the tile is not too large, filling in the chipped or cracked portion will also help keep the damage from getting worse.

The following shows two methods for fixing chipped ceramic floor tiles.

Filling in the damaged portion

1. Purchase an epoxy or adhesive filler from a DIY store. Choose one that closely matches the color of the tile.
2. Prepare the epoxy or adhesive as per the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Apply the filler into the chip or the crack.
4. Paint over the filler, if needed, to match the color of the tile.

Replacing the tile piece

1. Wear protective goggles and clothing before taking out the tile.
2. Lay a piece of cloth over the tile and, using a hammer, break up the piece of tile into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.
3. Take out all the pieces of broken tile and clean the area where the new tile is to be laid.
4. Apply adhesive to the tile evenly and set it in place. Wait for the adhesive to cure and dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
5. Once the tile has set and the adhesive is dry enough, apply grout along the outline of the new tile.
6. After the grout has set, finish of the project by cleaning the area.
