Diverticulitis may be treated at home if the symptoms are mild, states Mayo Clinic. A doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat infection, and have the patient follow a liquid diet and take over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen. This treatment is successful for the majority of people with uncomplicated diverticulitis.

A severe diverticulitis attack usually requires hospitalization, according to Mayo Clinic. Treatment in the hospital often includes intravenous antibiotics and may require a tube to drain any abscesses. In some cases, surgery is recommended for patients who have multiple attacks, a compromised immune system or certain complications, such as a perforation of the bowel or a bowel obstruction.
