Pictures of human tissue samples are only used to confirm a suspected diagnosis of a particular parasitic infection. The photos, along with other test results, might be sent for additional medical opinion to an organization such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Depending on the type of parasitic skin infection that is suspected, the Merck Manual lists required tests such as skin snip biopsy or scrapings from any sores or lesions to confirm the diagnosis. In a skin snip biopsy, a small sample of skin is shaved off with a surgical scalpel.
