Can ferrets eat cat food?

Ferrets can eat cat food, although specialty ferret food is recommended. If a ferret is expected to eat cat food, it should be of premium quality and contain as few meat by-products as possible. Ferret diets must be high in protein and fat but low in fiber and plant material.

Due to their short digestive systems and fast metabolisms, ferrets require frequent feeding. Dry food is therefore optimal, as it can be made available at all times without fear of spoilage. Obesity in ferrets is uncommon, although regular exercise is encouraged. Treats can be used in moderation as vitamin supplementation and as treatment for hairballs. Treats can also be used as effective training tools.
