Can you flush tampons?

Flushing tampons is not advisable, according to Money Crashers. Items made of cotton, such as tampons, have the tendency to snag on any nicks or cracks in the plumbing pipes and cause clogs. These are sometimes inconvenient and costly to rectify.
Money Crashers also notes that tampons are considered solid wastes that do not degrade easily in water. Over time, this is problematic for those with septic systems. For those with sewer systems, wastewater treatment facilities must remove tampons and send them to the landfill. U by Kotex recommends wrapping used tampons in toilet paper and disposing of them in the trash.
