Where can you find fresh figs?

During season, fresh figs are available in the produce section of markets such as Whole Foods or can be ordered online through Casacalabria.wordpress.com or Melissas.com. There are two fig seasons during the year.

The first fig season, or "breba," starts during the first weeks of June, and the second, or "new wood," runs from August to September. Some fig varieties are the Black Mission, the Brown Turkey and the Green Kadota. Fresh figs can be eated raw, baked or sauteed. Figs are a Mediterranean cuisine staple, and cooks pair them with smoked and salted meats, yogurt and cheese, as a topping for vanilla ice cream or simply poached in red wine.
