It is possible, though not recommended, to go to a gynecological appointment while menstruating, explains U by Kotex. Menstrual blood makes it more difficult for the gynecologist to swab and interpret a Pap smear result correctly.

U by Kotex advises that the best time for a gynecologist appointment is the week following your period, after any swelling, tenderness and menstrual bleeding have subsided. Menstrual-related breast tenderness and swelling may make it more difficult for the gynecologist to distinguish any lumps.

Besides clouding a Pap smear result, menstrual blood may make it more difficult for the gynecologist to notice any anatomical abnormalities on the walls of the vagina, explains Brown University Health Promotion.
