Where can you hear the sound a cicada makes?

People can listen to the sound that the cicada makes by finding cicadas in the wild or by listening to audio samples of cicada sounds through Cornell University's Macaulay Library. The Macaulay Library hosts 35 cicada audio recordings online as of 2015.

In the wild, cicadas live in the northeast and southeast portions of the United States, with the exception of Florida, according to the National Geographic. They also live around the world in countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Costa Rica, explains the Macaulay Library. The cicada sound is typically a buzzing or clicking sound, but the sound differs among the different cicada species. They exist around trees and in wooded areas.
