Can a hospital tell you if your loved one is a patient at their facility?

A hospital can tell you if your loved one is a patient at its facility as long as that patient has agreed to be part of the hospital's patient facility directory. The hospital can also disclose other select information to family and friends with this consent.
Other information a hospital can disclose upon request is the patient's room and hospital phone number, general condition, whether or not he has been released, and whether or not he has died.
A patient's location information may also be released even if consent has not been obtained if it is in his best interest medically to release the information. Specific circumstances that allow for this include emergency and incapacitation.
