Where can an individual train to teach English as a second language?

Master's programs in teaching English as a second language are available at many colleges and universities, but it is also possible to get certified in TEFL through a variety of shorter classroom or online programs. These programs typically lead to a teaching certificate or diploma.

The TOEFL master's program is more highly valued at many schools than TEFL certification, and schools within the United States may require teachers to have this advanced degree. In-class practice is a necessary part of the master's degree, as opposed to a certification, in which classroom training is not required. However, TEFL certification is generally less expensive and takes less time to complete. As of 2015, the certificate is often sufficient to get new teaching jobs at private schools, especially those in Asia, Latin America and Africa.
