Can latex paint go bad?

Although paint cans are not labeled with expiration dates, it is possible for latex paint to go bad. Fortunately, it is easy to tell when this happens, since the paint produces a strong and unpleasant odor.
Latex paint will go bad over time when stored in a can. It has a shelf life of about 10 years when sealed, but can also be ruined by freezing. Aside from the terrible smell, expired latex paint will also peel much more easily than normal when used. The odor of expired latex paint is rancid and noticeably different from the normal chemical smell of paint. Expired paint can also be identified by uneven color.
