"Emmanuelle" was released in 1974, two years after the success of "Last Tango in Paris," which paved the way for pornographic content in mainstream movies. "Emmanuelle" proved wildly successful in its home country of France, selling just under 9 million tickets. The financial success of the movie led to six sequels. Sylvia Kristel, who portrayed Emmanuelle in the first film, reprised her role in all six sequels.
