All Borders bookstores closed in September 2011 due to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company, which was based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was founded in 1971.

At its height in 2005, Borders had more than 1,200 bookstores worldwide, 15,000 employees and $4 billion in annual sales. The bookstore chain had lost significant business as customers switched to e-readers such as Amazon's Kindle, which launched in 2007, according to Bloomberg. Barnes & Noble, the nation's largest book chain, acquired the trademarks for Borders as well as its customer list. In October 2011, Borders' former website redirected its customers to Barnes & Noble's website.
