As of May 2014, the average salary of a bookkeeper in the United States is slightly more than $38,000. Although the average bookkeeper salary is less than the $47,230 salary reported for all careers, it is more than 300 percent of the 2015 national poverty line for a single person.

In certain states, the average bookkeeping salary is significantly higher than the nationwide average. In Alaska, the average salary is $44,080 per year, while it is greater than $54,000 in Washington, D.C. Other higher-paying states include Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey. The average bookkeeping salary in each of the three states is slightly above $43,000.
