To make a homemade mosquito repellent, mix witch hazel, vodka, carrier oil and essential oils. A mixture of essential oil, water and salt can also be effective.
To make a DIY insect repellent, use the following steps.
- Blend the ingredients
- Add the mixture to a spray bottle
- Spray the mixture on the skin
Make a mixture of 2 tablespoons of witch hazel, 1/2 teaspoon of vodka, 2 tablespoons of carrier oil such as almond oil, olive oil or grapeseed oil and 100 drops of essential oil, such as rosemary, lemongrass, citronella, tea tree, myrtle, peppermint or eucalyptus. For people who cannot source witch hazel, a mixture of 4 ounces of water, 5 drops of essential oil and 1/4 teaspoon salt can also be effective.
Pour the solution into a 4-ounce spray bottle and shake it well. The spray bottle makes it easier to apply the mixture.
To apply the repellent, spray it directly on the skin.
Although this homemade repellent is natural, people should take care to avoid contact with the eyes. It is also a good idea to do a skin test before applying the solution to large areas of skin in case any of the ingredients causes irritation or an allergic reaction. Store the repellent in a dark, cool place.
