The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John and Water Island. They were originally named by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage in 1493 for Saint Ursula and her virgin followers. The United States acquired St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John from Denmark during World War I for $25 million. In 1944, the United States bought Water Island, again from Denmark, for $10,000 and used it to build a defense installation called Fort Segarra.
