Keeping a smartphone battery charged above 50% as much as possible will maximize its lifespan according to Gizmodo. Frequently draining the battery or leaving it on the charger for long periods of time may harm the battery and reduce its lifespan.
Smartphones are generally powered by lithium-ion batteries. This type of battery performs best when charge levels remain above 50%. Frequently allowing a battery's charge to run to zero may cause long-term harm. It is best to fully charge and then completely drain the battery on a scheduled monthly basis so the battery can recalibrate.
Lithium-ion batteries may also deteriorate if left on the charger for long periods of time. To maximize lifespan, remove the phone from the charger just before it reaches maximum charge. Keeping it plugged in after it hits 100% can contribute to shorter battery life.
