Can a mole see?

A mole can see, but its vision is poor. Moles only distinguish light from dark and movement, but no colors. A mole's ears and eyes are internal, which prevents them from getting clogged while the animal burrows in dirt.

However, moles overcome their poor eyesight with acute movement and smell detection through bare skin patches covered with small, sensitive pimple-like protrusions on their muzzles. Moles eat their bodies' weight worth of earthworms each day, although they also like beetles and small mice. Moles collect earthworms, and chew off the front end of each earthworm to prevent the worms from escaping; this ensures a fresh food supply throughout the winter.
