The 18 National Motor Freight Codes can be found at FMLFreight.com or at Cerasis.com. Freight codes are based on weight, height, density, ease of handling and breakability.
Codes range from class 50 for clean freight on 4-by-4-foot pallets, to class 500 for low density-high value shipping such as bags of gold dust or ping pong balls. Freight codes refer to less-than-truckload shipping; in general, the higher the code number, the more expensive the shipping costs are.
The purpose of freight codes is to standardize shipping prices across carriers, warehouses and brokers. The codes are defined by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association.
