Where can you purchase traveler's checks?

Most major banks and credit unions sell traveler's checks. Additionally, the American Automobile Association and major credit card companies such as American Express, VISA, and MasterCard, also offer traveler's checks to members.

Sellers may charge a nominal service fee for purchasing traveler's checks. Traveler's checks are not typically used due to the prevalence of modern 24-hour ATMs, but are useful for avoiding ATM fees and when traveling to places with limited ATM access. The checks do not expire and may be refunded if they are lost or stolen. Authentication of the check requires a signature and appropriate identification when it is converted to cash.
