Can robots understand sarcasm?

As of 2015, the world has yet to see a robot or other unit of artificial intelligence (AI) that can properly understand sarcasm. Someday, developers could theoretically create AI that understands sarcasm, but there are major barriers to this kind of technological progress.
Scientists understand very little about how sarcasm works and why people find it funny, which would make it difficult to program into a robot's operating system. In general, robots have trouble interpreting nuance in human communication and emotions, mostly because our understanding of those topics is so elementary, not to mention difficult to translate into code.
