A salvage title cannot be removed from a vehicle. However, it is possible to replace a salvage title with a "rebuilt" or "reconditioned" title. Rebuilt title regulations may differ from state to state.
A salvage title means that a vehicle has damage worth more than its value, and an insurance company has deemed the vehicle a total loss. The damage may come from an accident, flooding or in some states, theft. A vehicle with a salvage title cannot be insured or driven on public roads. To obtain a rebuilt title, the vehicle must be repaired by a certified mechanic and then inspected by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If the vehicle passes inspection, the DMV will issue a rebuilt title.
