Three-way electrical switches operate the same receptacle from two power switches. Overhead lighting in a hallway that can be turned on or off from a switch at either end is an example of this type of wiring. Three-way switches do not have a fixed on/off position and are wider than their single-pole counterparts. Combining two three-way switches creates a four-way system that can operate a single light or receptacle from three locations.
