According to Medline Plus, shingles can occur in the mouth. Shingles is a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chicken pox.

People who had chicken pox as a child may develop shingles in their later adult years, states Medline Plus. Shingles is characterized by a blistering rash that itches and burns. The pain and rash can last for weeks. Treatments can include antiviral medications such as acyclovir and corticosteroids such as prednisone. While it is rare to have a recurrence of shingles, it is possible. Today, shingles vaccines can be obtained with the flu vaccine at pharmacies and drug stores throughout the United States.
