Sitting at a desk for prolonged periods can cause hip pain and other musculo-skeletal problems, as the Washington Post explains. Persons sitting at desks for long periods may develop tight hip flexor muscles and end up with limited range of motion, decreased mobility and chronic pain.
The chronic hip pain caused by excessive sitting may also stress the pelvis and cause chronic lower back pain. Sitting at a desk for prolonged periods can also cause chronic neck and shoulder pain and also cause the gluteal muscles to function improperly, resulting in the inability to squat or lift weights as well as hindering the body's ability to burn calories, according to NBC News.
