Teacup Maltese puppies can be purchased from Boutique Teacup Puppies, Silverbrook Maltese and Texas Teacups. Boutique Teacup Puppies uses the term "teacup" to describe dogs expected to mature at 3 to 4 pounds. Texas Teacups states that "teacups" mature at 4 to 5 pounds.

Silverbrook Maltese does not use the term "teacup" but says their dogs are from small lines of Maltese and mature at 3 to 7 pounds, sometimes smaller. The standard Maltese is already a very small dog, with the breed standard requiring the mature dog to weigh less than 7 pounds, with 4 to 6 pounds being the preferred size.
