Treatment of cherry eye typically includes the partial surgical replacement of the gland in the dog's eye. If the affliction is severe enough, however, a veterinarian will recommend the complete removal of the gland. Occasionally medications will be prescribed. These are generally anti-inflammatory drugs that reduce swelling and irritation.
Cherry eye is a congenital weakness of a dog's eye gland. Clinically referred to as eyelid protrusion, it occurs when there is an oval, pink mass protruding from the dog's third eyelid. The condition can develop in any breed. However, it is most prevalent in young bloodhounds, beagles and cocker spaniels.
