Can you walk on a broken ankle?

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a simple break in one bone in the ankle may not prevent an individual from being able to walk. The more bones that are broken, the more unstable the ankle will become, which can make it difficult to stand or put weight on the foot.

There are three bones that make up the ankle joint; these include the tibia, the fibula and the talus. There are also ligaments that hold the ankle bones and joints into position. When an ankle is fractured, there may be damage to any one of the bones as well as the ligaments.
