Windows 8.1 can be installed on older PCs; however, there are certain system requirements they must adhere to, and certain features may require additional hardware. For example, Windows 8.1 requires a 1 GHz or faster processor with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2, along with a DirectX9 capable graphics device.
In addition, the system requires 1 gigabyte of RAM and 16 gigabytes of hard disk space for a 32-bit install, or 2 gigabytes of RAM and 20 of gigabytes of hard disk space for a 64-bit install. To use the touch features of Windows 8.1, a tablet or monitor that supports multitouch is required.
