As of 2015, free work history reports are available through LexisNexis if a background or employment check has been performed. Other free options include referencing past income tax forms and using the information from W-2s.

Annual credit reports are free to all citizens and contain employment information; however, these may not include all employers. The information should be verified against other documents, such as taxes or a personal record.

Although the Social Security Administration keeps records of employment, it charges a small fee to access and send them out. Additionally, if a background check has never been requested by anyone, LexisNexis will not have information on file.
