How do you care for an asparagus fern?

Plant asparagus ferns in an area with plenty of indirect light if you live in USDA hardiness zones 10 or 11. In zones one through nine, plant the fern in a pot that you can move indoors when average nighttime temperatures fall below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Water outdoor ferns up to twice a week to keep the soil moist, and add a 2-inch layer of mulch in the fall and spring. Apply compost around outdoor ferns in the spring. For potted ferns, water when the top layer of soil is dry, and fertilize monthly throughout the spring and summer. Before the ferns show new growth in the spring, prune indoor and outdoor plants to 4 inches above the soil surface.
