A facial structure infection, a nerve disorder or an injury can cause sporatic cheek pain, according to WebMD. Causes of facial pain include an abscessed tooth, an infection or inflammation of the sinuses, temporomandibular disorders and trigeminal neuralgia. The pain may also occur without explanation.
Trigeminal neuralgia produces an intermittent, shooting pain in the face that is likened to an electric shock. It is caused by a blood vessel pressing on the nerve near the brain stem. An abscessed tooth or a sinus infection generally causes a constant throbbing pain in a particular area of the face. Both conditions are also accompanied by fever, according to WebMD
