What causes extra heartbeats?

Heart disease, anxiety and stress can cause extra heartbeats, according to the National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus. Medications can also cause the condition.
Certain foods and drinks can cause a person to experience extra heartbeats, specifically if it contains caffeine. All of these things can also cause other types of abnormal heart rhythms. If a person experiences extra heartbeats, they should consult their doctor as soon as possible. In some cases, such as heart disease or a problem with a heart valve, the condition can be very serious. Only a doctor can diagnose, administer the appropriate tests and treat the cause for the extra heartbeats.
