What are CD jewel cases made of?

CD jewel cases are made of polystyrene plastic. Teams from Germany and the Netherlands worked hard to make a case that was not much larger than the CD, but that also offered sufficient protection against damage.
The first CD jewel case was created in 1981, right after the invention of the CD. This case weighed more than 3 ounces and was much thicker than the cases made today. These cases broke easily and offered little protection for the CD inside. Another problem arose when people couldn't figure out how to open CD cases, so the design had to be reinvented.
