According to Business Insider, the NCAA indicated that the chance of a U.S. high school soccer athlete going professional was 0.04 percent in 2012. For college athletes, it was 1.0 percent.
Aside from professional soccer, the odds of becoming a college athlete are slim. Business Insider notes that out of 398,351 high school athletes in 2012, only 22,573 became college athletes. That translates to about 5 percent of the original pool of high school applicants. Only 49 were drafted at the professional level. The NCAA states that baseball was the only sport that had more than 2 percent of players go professional.
