STIs cause sores in the genital region that create openings in the skin, which can make it easier to contract HIV, says Health Line. HIV is short for human immunodeficiency virus, and it weakens the immune system. This makes the body susceptible to many attacks of illness. HIV that goes untreated can lead to AIDS. Yearly there are about 50,000 new cases of HIV, says Health Line.
