What is a check register template?

A check register template is a form used for recording transactions made on a checking account. It is maintained by the account holder as a method of tracking how much money is available in the account and catch mistakes or fraud.

Check register templates are generally formatted for Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software. Some registers are made to be printed so the user can maintain a handwritten hard copy of his transactions. The template usually includes a field for the date each transaction was made, the amount of the transaction and a brief description of the transaction. A field for keeping a running tally of the account balance is also usually included.
