Chemicals used in fracking include methanol, BTEX compounds, diesel fuel, lead and hydrogen fluoride. In 2011, a congressional report revealed that an estimated 10 million gallons of hazardous chemicals had been used by hydraulic fracturing companies.
In addition to appearing most often in hydraulic fracturing products, methanol has also been known to cause fatigue, eye irritation and headaches. BTEX compounds are known air pollutants that can cause bone marrow failure, cancer, leukemia and chest constriction. One of the biggest dangers to underground drinking water is diesel fuel, which also contains BTEX compounds. Diesel fuel has been linked to reddening of the skin.
