The normal serum range for chloride in blood is 98 to 108 mmol/L, notes MedicineNet. A low level is called hypochloremia. This happens when too much chloride is lost through excessive sweating, urinating or diarrhea. Problems with the kidneys and adrenal glands can also cause this condition. When chloride levels are high, hyperchloremia occurs. This is caused by some kidney problems or an overactive parathyroid gland.
